Your camera should think at home
On-device recognition is no longer the expensive option - and it changes what leaves your house.
For years, a camera that could tell a person from a cat did it by uploading the clip and asking a server. That was a reasonable trade in 2019, when the chip that could do the job cost more than the camera. It is not a reasonable trade now.
A modern indoor camera runs person, pet and parcel detection on a processor inside its own housing, in a few milliseconds, without the internet. The practical difference is not privacy in the abstract. It is that the footage leaving your home is the footage you asked for, that the alert arrives even when the connection is down, and that you are not paying a subscription for the arithmetic.
There is a second effect people notice faster: the alerts get useful. A cloud camera that charges per clip has an incentive to send you everything. A camera deciding locally has no reason to wake you for a moth.
What to look for on the box: whether detection is listed as on-device, whether recording can go to a card or your own storage, and whether the lens closes mechanically. A shutter you can hear is a promise you can check.
